Atwater Bungalows taken under consideration

At its January 21st meeting, the Cultural Heritage Commission voted to consider the amazing Atwater Bungalows for Historic-Cultural Monument status. The nomination from the Echo Park Historical Society was prepared by local preservationist John Wingler and supported by the Silver Lake Heritage Trust.
The Bungalows were designed by Robert Stacy-Judd, who designed many notable buildings in the Mayan motif, including the Aztec Motel in Monrovia, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings. This unique Echo Park courtyard reflects the Pueblo Revival Style in the form of a Hopi Village, and has been featured in American Bungalow Magazine as the architect’s “purest, quirkiest expression” of all-American architecture drawn from Pre-Columbian sources. The bungalows are still owned and beautifully maintained by the Atwater family.
